Places to Visit in Mustafapaşa

Mustafapaşa, formerly known as Sinasos, is a historical gem in Cappadocia, rich in both culture and architecture. Once a thriving Greek village with approximately 700 stone mansions before 1924, the village was known for its expertise in wine production and medicinal goods. Wealthy Greek merchants predominantly inhabited this area. Following the 1924 population exchange, the Greek residents relocated to Greece, and Turkish settlers took their place. Today, Mustafapaşa boasts about 93 houses, 30 churches, and chapels, making it a destination rich in history and culture.

Cappadocia Art and History Museum

Located in a 170-year-old mansion, this museum is also known as the “Doll Museum”. The museum houses around 3,000 handmade dolls crafted by artist Sibel Radiye Kül. These dolls vividly depict Turkish history, legends, and folklore, setting this museum apart from others in the region. It offers visitors a unique perspective on Turkish culture through its carefully curated exhibits.

Built in 1900, this structure originally served as a madrasah before transitioning into a mansion and finally a shop for molds. Today, it functions as a vocational school. It is one of Mustafapaşa’s most significant Ottoman-era buildings, featuring an intricately carved Ottoman emblem on its facade, resembling Sultan Abdulhamid II’s monogram.

Nestled among fairy chimneys and vineyards, this monastery exudes unparalleled charm. Though its exact construction date remains unknown, a rounded arch bears the inscription “Oayios Nikolaos” (Saint Nicholas). The monastery features a kitchen carved into a fairy chimney and a cemetery with 41 graves, some of which have been damaged, suggesting the site may have been looted in the past. The courtyard’s ivy-covered walls hold pieces of fabric tied as part of an old Greek wishing tradition.

Aios Konstantinos and Eleni Church

This church, built in 1729 and restored during the reigns of Sultan Ahmed I and Sultan Abdulmecid, has a fascinating inscription at its entrance detailing its history. Unfortunately, time has taken its toll, and the vibrant frescoes once adorning the walls have faded away.

Also known as Ayios Vasilios, this multi-story church was carved into the rock in a Post-Byzantine style, making it unique among Cappadocia’s churches. Places to Visit in Mustafapaşa: Gomeda Valley

Gomeda Valley is the most notable attraction in Mustafapaşa. Named after the nearby Gomeda Ruins, the valley is dotted with countless tunnels, some of which are pitch-dark. Historically, one of these caves was used for collecting rainwater, which is now utilized to irrigate poplar trees.

Although Gomeda Valley receives fewer visitors than other valleys due to its scarcity of fairy chimneys, it is a fascinating site with approximately 600 homes, two churches, and an underground city. The valley was historically inhabited by Greek residents.

Legend has it that Gomeda Valley was a frequent haunt of fairies and the battleground for the forces of good and evil. After evil was defeated, it is said to have retreated into a cave for a long slumber, waiting to awaken only when good vanishes from the world.
